Coverage

Renters insurance,
the best deal you're not buying.

Your landlord's policy covers the building, not your life inside it. Renters insurance is one of the best deals in personal finance.

What it actually covers

For most renters, a policy runs $10–$25 per month and includes three big things.

  • Personal propertyYour furniture, electronics, clothes, kitchen stuff, bike — replaced if stolen, damaged by fire or water, or lost in covered events.
  • Personal liabilityIf a guest is injured in your apartment or you accidentally damage someone else's property, you're protected.
  • Loss of useIf a fire or covered event makes your unit uninhabitable, the policy pays for a hotel and meals while you're displaced.
  • Medical payments to othersMinor medical bills for guests injured in your unit, regardless of fault.

Quick math

Add up everything you own — furniture, clothes, electronics, kitchen, books. Most renters underestimate by 2–3x.

A studio apartment usually contains $15,000–$25,000 of stuff. A 2-bedroom often crosses $40,000.

If you couldn't write a check to replace it all tomorrow, you need a policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does my landlord's insurance cover my stuff?
No. Their policy covers the structure of the building. If a pipe bursts and ruins your couch, TV, and laptop, that's your problem unless you have renters insurance.
Replacement cost vs. actual cash value — what's the difference?
Actual cash value pays what your stuff is worth today (depreciated). Replacement cost pays what it'd cost to buy new equivalents. Replacement cost is usually only a few dollars more per month and is almost always worth it.
Are roommates covered?
Generally no — each adult should have their own policy. We can write them together if you want, but separate policies are usually cleaner.
What about my stuff when I travel or move?
Most renters policies cover personal property worldwide. Items in a moving truck or storage unit are typically covered too. We'll confirm the specifics for your policy.
Will my apartment require it?
More and more landlords do — typically with $100K liability minimum. Even when it's not required, it's one of the highest-value insurance products you can buy.
